[Entry #08]The road to the first draft...

Updated: Dec 16, 2020

The progress that I have made so far is that I have completed editing all of my interviews so I now know what clips I am using. I have also arranged the clips onto the multitrack. One thing that I struggled with was finding a song that would play under my voice overs at the beginning and end of my documentary. It was very time consuming but eventually I found one that fitted in with my documentaries theme really well it is called 'Uncertainty Principle' even the name of the song fits well because international students are very uncertain about their future education.

I also recorded some of my own sounds that I added to create tension and to emphasise certain parts of my documentary. I recorded the ticking sound from my clock which I put under when Maika is talking about being alone at University and being uncertain about the future to really build up the tension in that segment. Another sound I recorded was my door slamming shut which is under the part when Maika talks about being 'stuck in their dorm rooms with no end in sight'. I decided to put that soundbite there because I really wanted the listeners to imagine they were experiencing the same emotions as Maika, to fully immerse the listener into her story. The final sound I recorded was students talking in a classroom which featured in the part where Maika discusses having a lack of routine and missing going to class and talking to her friends face to face. I put this sound here because I wanted to create the atmosphere of a noisy classroom to emphasise her point more and to set the scene for the listener.

Luckily, after I had put all the clips onto the multitrack, it actually came to 7 minutes exactly so I didn't have to worry about needing to cut it down.

Furthermore, I wrote my script and then emailed my draft and script to my supervisor for her to listen and give feedback in our next meeting.

So, I just need to wait for the meeting with my supervisor for the feedback on my draft and then my next steps are to make all of the changes needed.
